Smart Blocks, launched this week by Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney, helps people tune up their building by helping them save energy in the common areas of their apartment block. It is aimed at strata managers and apartment owners and provides information, templates, guidance and clever tracking tools to help those who want to save money and reduce their carbon footprint to work with their communities to get real outcomes.
The project is a great example of what can be accomplished when we engage the communities for which a design are intended using our co-design methods. The initial focus of the project changed dramatically as we learned more about the complexities of getting approvals for upgrades within strata managed buildings.
It’s the kind of project that Digital Eskimo loves to work on (and excels at!); a complex stakeholder landscape, substantial content strategy and creation, expertise in sustainability communication and some smart digital technology were all required. All of this resulted in an effective web platform that engages a specific audience and provides them with a toolkit that makes it easy and fun to champion and manage their building’s energy efficiency projects.
If you are a renter you can still get smart by sending the web site to your strata manager or owner and if you’re an owner there’s now an easy way to get smart about your building’s energy use!
Smart Blocks is the result of a collaboration with the City of Sydney, City of Melbourne, Strata Community Australia and a broad consortium of stakeholders (and project partners including our friends at Huddle and Viridis) and was funded by the Australian Government (Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism).
